{"id":1608,"date":"2016-11-21T18:46:20","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T02:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mindworkshypnotherapy.com\/?p=1608"},"modified":"2017-02-03T10:31:07","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T18:31:07","slug":"tasty-healthy-quick-cheap-holiday-treats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mindworkshypnotherapy.com\/index.php\/2016\/11\/21\/tasty-healthy-quick-cheap-holiday-treats\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasty, Healthy, Quick &#038; Cheap Holiday Treats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/us.123rf.com\/450wm\/rawpixel\/rawpixel1603\/rawpixel160314212\/53727328-buffet-dinner-dining-food-celebration-party-concept.jpg?ver=6http:\/\/\" alt=\"Celebrating the holidays with food\" width=\"450\" height=\"225\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Celebrating the Holidays<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Does\u00a0the title of this post seem somewhat oxymoronic to you? &#8220;No way holiday treats can be tasty AND\u00a0healthy!&#8221; you say.\u00a0 I disagree and I&#8217;ll provide some examples to defy that\u00a0claim later in this post.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, starting Labor Day, like a\u00a0stampede of bulls in the streets of Pamplona, come the holidays:\u00a0Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and New Year&#8217;s. Our\u00a0senses are assaulted by decadent delectables loaded with bad fats, processed sugars, salt, gluten, and starch. Not just\u00a0at work or at friends&#8217;, but\u00a0at the bank, in the gym, and even at the\u00a0gynecologist&#8217;s. \u00a0Lemon bars, spritz cookies, rugelach, chocolate fudge, and pecan sandies \u00a0are everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0Devious Foodie Mindset<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To forgo these traditional treats, and others like latkes and kugels, stuffing and pie can seem\u00a0almost sacrilegious during holidays. At least to\u00a0the devious foodie part of my mind that bombards me with reasons\u00a0to\u00a0indulge (at all or with multiple helpings), like &#8220;You&#8217;ll make your\u00a0hostess feel good&#8221; or &#8220;You&#8217;ll never find\u00a0sausage and cornbread stuffing this good again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But I am not just a foodie. \u00a0I&#8217;m still a bit\u00a0overweight with \u00a0some borderline bloodwork (re: cholesterol and blood sugar) and a history of eating\u00a0for pleasure and comfort, especially when things go wrong, or\u00a0I&#8217;m feeling fearful, frustrated, or feeling down.<\/p>\n<p>I am not alone in this. \u00a0The fact that almost 40% of the world&#8217;s adults are either overweight (with a Body Mass Index over 25) or obese (where the BMI is over 30)\u00a0suggests that unhealthy (junk) food is widely being used by them as a mood altering drug, not just a source of nutrition. \u00a0And the same is true for even very young children. The\u00a0World Health Organization reports\u00a0that the number of overweight or obese children up to 5 years of age\u00a0was 42 million in 2013, and expects it to be 70 million by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing this closer to my home, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ymcala.org\/metro\/classes\/weight-loss-programs\">current obesity rate in the greater Los Angeles area<\/a>, which includes\u00a0adults and children, is 24.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, a\u00a0study at Tufts University showed that for those\u00a0already obese or overweight, holiday porking\u00a0can pack on at least 5\u00a0pounds, which I know, from past experience, can\u00a0hang around as a muffin top for months, if not years, after the\u00a0tastebuds have been titillated.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that a<span class=\"s1\">mong the non-overweight population, the amount\u00a0gained during the six weeks from Thanksgiving through New Year&#8217;s accounts for\u00a051% of annual weight gain, which is typically 1-2 pounds in adults. \u00a0While this may not be cause for much concern\u00a0during any given year, the accumulation of these pounds year after year certainly contributes to an substantial increase in health risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Besides issues pertaining to physical well-being, pigging<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0out causes other\u00a0unwanted side effects, such as<\/span>\u00a0sluggishness, brain fog, the discomfort of clothes I can barely button, and the embarrassment from unsightly back fat\u00a0beneath a clingy top.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it doesn&#8217;t have to be that way. \u00a0The deliciousness of the holidays need not be sacrificed, triggering\u00a0feelings of deprivation and exclusion. We\u00a0can allow ourselves some of the most mouthwatering indulgences without the added pounds and guilt, if most\u00a0of the\u00a0scrumptious\u00a0edibles we consume are\u00a0healthy AND \u00a0tasty.<\/p>\n<p>It takes some planning ahead and preparing, but that&#8217;s well worth it, especially since there is an added bonus: we practice developing a\u00a0mindset that supports acting with self-love and self-respect, rather than giving in\u00a0to self-defeating impulses. Each time we make healthy choices, we reinforce the probability that we will do so\u00a0on the next occasion when a choice is called for.<\/p>\n<p>We can prepare ourselves mentally to dial back our\u00a0gluttonous inclinations, using hypnosis\u00a0to\u00a0motivate and encourage saving calories\u00a0on Tuesday that are spent\u00a0Friday partying more wisely.<\/p>\n<p>We can also use hypnosis to cultivate an attitude of merriment that doesn&#8217;t depend on food.\u00a0There&#8217;s still time to imbed into our subconscious a holiday mindset that incorporates other ways of celebrating with those we love. \u00a0Some of these ways involve being out in nature, and moving the body:\u00a0shooting hoops or touch football, hikes in the mountains or walks by the beach, snowball fights, ice skating, sledding, cross-country and downhill skiing,\u00a0are just a few, including walking the malls while\u00a0holiday shopping<\/p>\n<p>And not all the fun has to involve physical activity or being outdoors. \u00a0\u00a0We can read, take\u00a0winter naps, watch classic holiday movies (e.g. It&#8217;s a Wonderful Life), cuddle by the fire, play boardgames, cards, and computer games, listen or play music, call friends and loved ones far away. \u00a0 Let&#8217;s challenge our\u00a0imaginations to create\u00a0fun ways to celebrate that nourish\u00a0the soul as well as the body this season.<\/p>\n<p>As promised, here are links to just a few recipes I&#8217;ve come across that fit with my\u00a0&#8220;Tasty, Healthy, Quick &amp; Cheap Holiday Treats&#8221; philosophy. \u00a0You&#8217;re sure to uncover a treasure trove of others with some basic Internet keyword searches of your own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cauliflower Crust Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of eating pizza anytime, including breakfast. \u00a0Granted a cauliflower crust pizza may not be\u00a0as mouth watering as a thick cheese-and-bacon stuffed\u00a0crust one,\u00a0but around the holidays, I make\u00a0an attitude adjustment. I gladly save\u00a0calories on savory snacks (provided they are still yummy) so I can\u00a0spend them on sweets. This pizza lets me do that.\u00a0Free of grains and gluten, this \u00a0treat is only 300 calories for half the pizza, I\u00a0can even add a little pepperoni, ham, bacon or sausage, as well as other veggies, while\u00a0keeping it low-calorie and delicious.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0all the vitamins (e.g. 77% of daily recommended C), minerals, anti-oxidants, complex carbs, fiber, and heart healthy Omega-3 fats, and cancer fighting properties in cauliflower, eating this comfort food is actually doing something good for my health. \u00a0Give this \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/fitness\/Low-Carb-Cauliflower-Crust-Pizza-Recipe-30739512\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Deen pizza recipe<\/a>\u00a0a try.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a\u00a0&#8220;sneak in the vegetables&#8221; dish even your kids will enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>And if you&#8217;re like me, you don&#8217;t\u00a0believe microwaving food is healthy, so steam the grated cauliflower in less time\u00a0and substitute\u00a0your own <a href=\"http:\/\/food-hacks.wonderhowto.com\/how-to\/no-more-pam-make-cheaper-healthier-cooking-spray-home-0154039\/\">cheaper and healthier cooking spray<\/a>\u00a0instead of an artificial one like Pam.<\/p>\n<p>Total prep and cooking\u00a0time is about 30 minutes\u00a0and costs about $8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cranberry Turkey Pinwheels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re strapped for time, Amber&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dessertnowdinnerlater.com\/cranberry-turkey-pinwheels\/\">quick turkey pinwheels<\/a> are a great way to enjoy\u00a0some of the traditional Thanksgiving Day fare\u00a0without having to cook. \u00a0To make them healthier, I suggest using neufchatel cheese with less fat and calories than the regular cream cheese. Also, her recipe for cranberry salsa sounds delish, but if you prefer not using sugar, try this <a href=\"http:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/3392\/cranberry-sauce-recipe\/\">healthier cranberry sauce recipe<\/a>\u00a0from Wellness Mama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sweet Potato Latkes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t imagine Hanukkah without latkes. \u00a0I used to feel guilty eating them and deprived if I didn&#8217;t. \u00a0When I started eating more healthy, I switched out white potatoes for less expensive sweet potatoes and use coconut oil or olive oil\u00a0instead of controversial canola or others. Sweet potatoes\u00a0have\u00a0more vitamin C, 400% of the daily requirement of vitamin A, fewer calories, more fiber, and fewer overall carbs.\u00a0They also serve me as\u00a0a &#8220;go-to&#8221;\u00a0snack to\u00a0satisfy\u00a0my sweet tooth, with\u00a0only 7 grams of sugar each. I would tend to feel guilty eating traditional latkes, but deprived if I didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when it occurred to me that sweet potato latkes would be a great compromise. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.foodnetwork.com\/healthyeats\/2015\/12\/06\/sweet-potato-latkes-2-ways\/\">Alexandra Caspero&#8217;s recipe<\/a> I found online that could\u00a0make many\u00a0a traditional latke lover a convert. \u00a0She provides two versions: one fried, one baked, along with suggested condiments for each. The baked version has about 20% fewer calories and close to half the fat, and takes\u00a0only about 20 minutes to cook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-Dairy, Almond Flavored\u00a0Egg Nog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My favorite holiday drink, hands down, is egg nog. \u00a0One sip of that\u00a0cold, creamy, sweet and rich libation has\u00a0my tastebuds flipping out\u00a0and begging me\u00a0to down the whole quart, which I have done, I confess, home alone. So knowing I would be too embarrassed and humiliated to\u00a0do that in front of people, I have since restricted my egg nog indulgence to a cup at a party.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if they still do have it, but Jack in the Box used to feature an egg nog milkshake that was to die for&#8230;and maybe from. Just\u00a0thinking about all the sugar (103 g), bad fat (54 g), and calories (1135) they used per cup\u00a0make my arteries shudder. \u00a0Luckily, the one\u00a0near my neighborhood shut down, so the temptation to indulge was removed.<\/p>\n<p>I have gone back to using unsweetened almond and coconut milks since I found some organic brands (e.g. &#8220;New Barn&#8221; and &#8220;three trees&#8221;) without carrageenan, an additive in most other brands that has been linked to malignancies and stomach problems.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/livingwellmom.com\/2015\/12\/dairy-free-eggnog\/\">non-dairy egg nog recipe<\/a>\u00a0that I am really\u00a0eager to try comes from Erika.\u00a0Her\u00a0almond and coconut milk egg nog concoction sounds delish. It features organic eggs, maple syrup instead of refined sugar, and of course, vanilla extract and nutmeg for flavor. \u00a0Erika says the hardest part of making the nog is separating the eggs. \u00a0No biggie!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chocolate Mousse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For many,\u00a0a day without chocolate is \u00a0a day without sunshine, and holidays are\u00a0no exception. \u00a0If that sounds like you, this 5-minute <a href=\"http:\/\/livingwellmom.com\/2016\/04\/healthy-chocolate-mousse\/\">&#8220;healthy sneak&#8221; dessert recipe<\/a> from Erika will jingle your bells. Its surprise\u00a0ingredient\u00a0is\u00a0a \u00a0superfood loaded with good fat and other nutrients to help protect the body from heart disease, cancer, and degenerative eye and brain diseases. \u00a0The recipe serves four and costs about\u00a0$10 to make. \u00a0Go check it out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coping With Holiday Stressors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For many, the holidays are a hectic time involving\u00a0heightened stress and anxiety.
