{"id":2913,"date":"2021-06-27T17:23:32","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T00:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mindworkshypnotherapy.com\/?p=2913"},"modified":"2021-08-05T15:06:48","modified_gmt":"2021-08-05T22:06:48","slug":"why-are-you-dragging-your-feet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mindworkshypnotherapy.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/27\/why-are-you-dragging-your-feet\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Procrastination: An Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2936\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2936\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2936\" src=\"https:\/\/mindworkshypnotherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/21-01-14-Bad-habits-characters-20-300x223.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daydreaming on the Job<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Procrastination: Widespread Among Us<\/h2>\n<p>Procrastination is arguably the most common form of self-sabotage.\u00a0 And not just among &#8220;losers&#8221;.\u00a0 Some of the most accomplished people of all time delay(ed) their goals for no good reason.\u00a0 Author Truman Capote, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and artist\/inventor Leonardo da Vinci rank high among them.<\/p>\n<p>Recent studies suggest that among adults, 15-20% of adults chronically procrastinate and 25% consider procrastination to be one of their defining personality traits.\u00a0 Among college students, procrastination is even more widespread: 80-95% procrastinate to some degree, around 70% regard themselves as procrastinators, and about 50% say that their procrastination is consistent and problematic.<\/p>\n<p>Does knowing that comfort you? Does it make you feel less bad about yourself?\u00a0 I have to admit that it did me. Whether it should is not the point here.\u00a0 I admit I have been and still am, to some degree, a procrastinator.\u00a0 And a self-saboteur of many stripes. I have also spent much of the last 10 years helping clients, researching, writing and speaking about self-sabotage and procrastination.\u00a0 So I know procrastination and other forms of self-sabotage only too well.<\/p>\n<p>What I think is really important and needs to be emphasized is that far too many of our goals and dreams go unrealized because <strong>WE SCREW OURSELVES OVER.<\/strong>\u00a0 Crazy isn&#8217;t it? <strong>WE UNDERMINE OUR OWN SUCCESS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think about it. Procrastination keeps you from learning, creating, discovering, having, experiencing, enjoying, and contributing to the world so much of what you are capable of.\u00a0 Imagine what you could accomplish if you knew how to overcome it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem is not knowing how to stop yourself from procrastinating.<\/strong>\u00a0 And to do that, you must first:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Become aware of all the ways you procrastinate &#8211; You can&#8217;t stop procrastinating if you don&#8217;t know what forms of behavior your procrastination takes.<\/li>\n<li>Figure out why you procrastinate &#8211; Without identifying the reasons why you procrastinate on your goals, or, to put it another way, what the pay-off is (what it gets you), you won&#8217;t be able to find another way to get that pay-off without self-sabotage.<\/li>\n<li>Become conscious of what triggers it &#8211; If you don&#8217;t know what activates your procrastination, you can&#8217;t devise strategies to avert it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the next four posts, entitled &#8220;How Do I Procrastinate? Let Me Count the Ways,&#8221; &#8221; Why Do I Procrastinate? Let Me Count the Whys &#8211; Part 1 and 2,&#8221; and &#8220;What Triggers My Procrastination? Let Me Count the Whens&#8221;\u00a0 we&#8217;ll take a look at these issues.
